How to Set Up Brave Browser for Real IP Access While Using Proton VPN

Summary

When using Proton VPN to secure your internet traffic, some websites may block you based on the IP address associated with your VPN. This can be frustrating when trying to access services like text messaging platforms, banks, or local government portals. If you want to stay protected with Proton VPN but still access these sites using your real IP address, a split tunneling strategy is the solution.

This guide explains how to configure Brave Browser to work outside of Proton VPN on Windows, allowing specific trusted websites to see your actual location—without disabling your VPN entirely.

Why Use Brave for Real IP Browsing?

Brave is a privacy-focused browser that blocks trackers, ads, and fingerprinting by default. When used outside of the VPN, it still gives you strong protection against tracking while allowing sites to see your real IP address. It strikes an ideal balance between usability and privacy.

Step 1: Create a Dedicated Brave Profile for Real IP Use

Keeping your VPN-exempt browsing separate reduces the risk of cookie leaks or cross-contamination.

How to Do It:

  1. Open Brave.
  2. Click the profile icon (top right corner).
  3. Click "Add Profile" > "Add".
  4. Name it something like Real IP or Trusted Sites Only.
  5. Customize the icon and color if desired.
  6. You now have a profile dedicated to Real IP access.

💡 Use this profile only for sites you trust that block VPNs.

Step 2: Exclude Brave from Proton VPN (Windows Only)

Configure Split Tunneling:

  1. Open Proton VPN.
  2. Click the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Go to the Connection tab.
  4. Scroll to Split Tunneling and enable it.
